🌞 How Cabo Got its Cool (and More!)

Hola hola,

We’ve got a fun mix of Cabo goodness for you here — from vintage Cabo flashbacks to safe swimming spots, plus taco tips, inspectors and new foodie finds!😊

How Cabo Got its Cool! A Vintage Look Back

Over the years, we’ve watched Los Cabos evolve from a laid-back beach escape into a glitzy playground of celebrity sightings, poolside margaritas and mega-resorts.

But Cabo’s star power started long before the first infinity pool was poured. 🌟

Back in the mid-1900s, the son of a Mexican president and his Hollywood starlet wife helped put Cabo on the map. They built a private seaside hideaway and the original Palmilla Hotel — attracting jet-setters like Eisenhower, Bing Crosby and Lucille Ball. 🍸🌴

In the 60s and 70s, adventurous travelers like Beverly Parsons (a lovely woman we connected with on Facebook) arrived in Cabo.

That vintage pic above? It’s Beverly and her husband in 1970 — they visited via the Shady Lady, a yacht owned by movie star Jerry Lewis.

Intrigued? Take a trip back in time — and discover how “Old Cabo” became the cool hotspot we know today!

Which Beaches are Safe for Swimming in Cabo?

Okay, so you probably know... Cabo’s gorgeous beaches aren’t all safe for swimming.

One big culprit? Rip currents. (They’re often called “rip tides.”) 🌊

These powerful currents pull water away from shore — like invisible underwater rivers — and can sweep even strong swimmers out fast.

That’s why knowing which beaches are swimmable is super important.

Of course, there’s Medano Beach, the most popular safe swimming beach in Cabo. But it’s not the only one! 🏖️

You’ve also got lovely Playa Palmilla, family-friendly Chileno Bay and a few more. We’ve rounded them up in our guide on Cabo’s best swimming beaches so you know where to go!

Local Buzz: New Restaurant Openings

A few fresh spots are heating up the Cabo dining scene — and they’re worth checking out:

  • Mr. Toro Steak and Tacos — Juicy cuts, delish tacos and a lovely courtyard strung with fairy lights
  • Fit and Fat — Burgers, big salads and casual bites that strike the right balance
  • Nao CaboMichelin-recommended Mediterranean fare in San Jose del Cabo

More Cabo News You Can Use

Spotted more inspectors around the Marina, Medano Beach or Plaza Amelia Wilkes lately?

They’re not out to spoil the fun — just making sure every taco stand and souvenir stall meets health and permit standards.

Shop and snack smart

  • Look for a permit: A laminated badge from the Secretaría de Economia means the vendor is legit.
  • Check for cleanliness: Gloves, covered containers and wipeable surfaces are all good signs.
  • Support real artisans: For authentic crafts, you can find some great stuff at Plaza Amelia Wilkes, home to many artisan booths and stalls.

Where to find tasty tacos?

➡️ You can also skip the street stalls and check out our list of 15 taco joints we love — no permits needed!

From cheap-and-cheerful (here’s to Tacos Gardenias and their delish grilled shrimp tacos!) to elevated creations at La Lupita Taco & Mezcal (duck with mole, anyone?), there’s something for every taco fan.

Try a walking taco-and-food tour!

➡️ Join this 5-star downtown Cabo taco-and-food tour.

You’ll hit local favorites for tacos, tamales, tostado, quesadillas and sweets — plus a tequila tasting. Over 1,245 glowing reviews say it’s muy delicioso!

Hello hello again! We’ve just returned from two fabulous weeks in the south of France and a sailing cruise to Corsica — and oh, what a trip! October turned out to be the perfect time to go ☀️ — warm sunny days in the mid-70s, the Mediterranean still invitingly swimmable and fewer crowds (though we still had to book restaurants and tours in advance). The first five days we stayed in the Nice area. Here, we balanced our love of old-town wandering with plenty of coastal walks — because for us,...

Hello hello again! Are you, like us, missing summer already? With fall on the horizon, it feels like the perfect time to start dreaming about a cruise. 🚢 The other night, friends told us over dinner that their daughter and son-in-law (both doctors in California) sailed on one of the new Ritz-Carlton yachts — and absolutely raved about it. Indeed, luxury hotel brands like Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons and Aman are launching ships that look nothing like the cruises of old! They’re part of an...

Hello again! Think Europe means shoulder-to-shoulder piazzas, endless lines and fully booked restaurants? Think again. If you’d rather sip your cappuccino without a sea of selfie sticks around you, we’ve got just the ticket. From charming villages with cobbled streets to little-known cities that sparkle in autumn (and even winter!) and under-rated countries, these lesser-known spots are perfect for curious travelers who crave space to breathe – without skimping on beauty or culture. ➡️ It’s...
